Introduction
This article will give you reference on installation of Valina card reader on existing BATMFour. You will need to use your own tools and equipment, please be sure to read carefully and take everything on site, although many steps can be covered with included tool set.
Overview
Upgrade consist of replacement metal sheet designed for reader installation, USB reduction for data connection and basic mounting fasteners. You will need to source your own card reader.
Installation steps
Prepare your Q5000 card reader. Card reader have a number code on the back and while technically not needed for configuration, we recommend to note what number is in which terminal for future reference. Once the installation is done, the code won´t be visible.
Insert terminal into rubber spacer as per picture.
Rubber spacer is supplied by QPay together with Q5000 on your demand. Don´t forget to mention it during order.
Place reader display down (onto suitable surface to not scratch it) and place upgrade sheet metal onto reader.
Align mounting holes with thread in reader, you can use USB C cutout for coarse locating.
Use supplied screws and washers to attach reader (there is 1 spare of each). Do not tight them individually, rather insert all and tight them together.
Use only a gentle torque to tighten these screws as reader nuts are embedded in plastic. You only need to ensure that reader is not loose, if you tighten these screws hard, you risk reader damage.
Rest of the manual closely follow Valina upgrade kit. If you have some training for that, you can mostly reuse it. Do not throw away any fasteners, you will need to reuse them.
Before any maintenance on the terminal, don´t forget to turn it off from mains.
Open top door and remove computer cover.
Remove fingerprint reader by unscrewing 6 serrated nuts located at the perimeter of fingerprint holder (socket size 7mm - included in toolset). You can store fingerprint reader temporary in cross bar, so it won´t interfere with your progress.
Release NFC antenna sticker by carefully wedging a knife under it. You can remove it completely and store, or just lift sides as shown here.
Remove 2 self locking nuts (socket size 5,5mm - included in toolset) while holding screws by Phillips screwdriver (included in toolset).
If you do not have NFC configuration, you can now remove the antenna cover. If you do have NFC, continue with antenna disconnecting. To disconnect NFC antenna, remove NFC reader cover by unscrewing 1 screw and sliding cover away.
Antenna connector is secured in place by a little bit of hot glue. If you have hot air gun, you can melt it, but less demanding is to use knife to cut it away. Once released, slide connector to disconnect.
Little bit of hot glue is also used to secure other end of cable, carefully release it and remove NFC antenna. Connector goes through hole in metal sheet.
Unscrew 11 serrated nuts (socket size 7mm - included in toolset) to release front plate.
Remove only top most plate, leave distance plate installed.
Place upgrade metal sheet with Q5000 installed and screw back 10 serrated nuts that we removed earlier minus 1 located in corner. Before tightening them, wiggle a bit with the metal sheet to make sure it is fully seated.
Be gentle with torque used to tighten these nuts, we recommend 2,3 Nm as limit. If over torqued, screws will make indentations on the other side of metal sheet.
Install fingerprint reader back, make sure that reader is nicely centered with cutout by checking from front of the machine.
Install NFC cover (with antenna if applicable). Do not over toque these 2 screws as it will bend plastic cover. Place sticker back and press in, so it stick to the cover on whole area. If you have NFC, connect antenna back into reader. Polarity does not matter, pins are equal. You don´t have to glue it in place, unless you plan some long distance transportation of the machine. Then install NFC reader cover back into designated place by sliding and securing with designated screw.
Connect power supply for Q5000 into power strip and route power cable together with main cable bungle. You can twist it around or use zip ties. We found out that power cable length is a little bit on the shorter side, but acceptable. If you find it too short, you can use USB cable extender to make it longer.
Connect USB C cable into reader and USB header to female reduction into other end of cable.
Connect pin header into motherboard. Be sure you have it in correct orientation, otherwise it won´t work - but shouldn’t be damaged.
Use provided ZIP Ties to secure cables going into Q5000 to the provided tie point. This provide basic protection against accidental disconnection or damage if there is pull force applied onto cables.
Turn on the BATM, check that installation was successful, and reader is working. If everything is fine, turn BATM off, install computer cover (make sure you do not pinch card reader cables).
Hardware installation is completed and you may proceed with SW setup.
