This guide describes the installation of the Q5000 card reader on a BATMFour.

For software configuration instructions, please see: https://generalbytes.atlassian.net/wiki/x/EoBl3Q

Overview

Installation consists of:

  • the custom cover plate from GB designed specifically for the reader installation on the BATMFour,

  • a USB reduction for the data connection, and

  • basic mounting fasteners.

  • Obviously, you’ll also need a Q5000 (not sold or included by GB).

Installation steps

Prepare your Q5000 card reader. Card readers have a number code on the back and - while technically not needed for configuration - we recommend you note which number is in which terminal for future reference. The code on the reader won't be visible once the installation is done.

Insert the Q5000 terminal into the rubber spacer as shown in the picture.

The rubber spacer is supplied by QPay with the Q5000 on demand.

  • Don´t forget to request it during your order from QPay!

Place the reader display down (onto a suitable surface so as not to scratch it) and place the custom plate onto the reader.

Align the mounting holes with the thread in reader. Use the USB-C cutout for roughing out the position.

Use the supplied screws and washers to attach the reader (there is 1 spare of each). Do not tighten them individually, rather start ALL and THEN tighten them together.

DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Use only a gentle torque to tighten these screws. The reader nuts are embedded in plastic. You only need to ensure that the reader is not loose. If you overtighten these screws, you risk reader damage.

The rest of the manual closely follows the Valina upgrade kit. If you have some training for that, you can mostly reuse it. Do not throw away any fasteners, you will need to reuse them.

Be sure to remove power to the BATM before performing any maintenance on the BATM.

Open the top door and remove the computer cover.

Remove the fingerprint reader by unscrewing the 6 serrated nuts located at the perimeter of the fingerprint holder (socket size 7mm - included in your toolset). Store the fingerprint reader temporarily in the cross bar support, so it won't interfere with your progress.

Release the NFC antenna sticker by carefully wedging a knife under it. You can remove it completely and store it, or just lift the sides as shown here.

Remove the 2 self-locking nuts (socket size 5,5mm - included in the toolset) while holding the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver (included in your toolset).

If you do not have the NFC configuration, you can now remove the antenna cover. If you do have NFC, continue with disconnecting the antenna. To disconnect NFC antenna, remove NFC reader cover by unscrewing the screw and sliding the cover away.

Antenna connector is secured in place by hot glue. If you have a hot air gun, you can melt it, or use a knife to cut it away. Once released, slide the connector to disconnect it.

A little bit of hot glue is also used to secure the other end of the cable. Carefully release it and remove the NFC antenna. The NFC connector now goes through the hole in the custom metal cover.

Unscrew the 11 serrated nuts (socket size 7mm - included in your toolset) to release the original plate.

Remove only the top-most (original) plate (leave the distance plate installed).

Position the upgrade custom metal plate with the Q5000 installed in place, and refasten the 10 serrated nuts that we removed earlier (minus 1 unusable nut located in the corner).

  • Before tightening them, wiggle the metal cover plate a little bit to ensure it is fully seated.

  • Be gentle with the torque used to tighten these nuts, we recommend 2,3 Nm as the maximum limit. If overtightened, the screws will make indentations on the visible side of the upgrade cover plate.

Install the fingerprint reader.

  • Ensure that the reader is properly centered in the cutout by checking from the front of the machine.

Install NFC cover (with antenna if applicable).

  • Do not overtighten these 2 screws as it will bend the plastic cover.

  • Place sticker back and press in, so that it sticks to the cover completely.

  • If you have NFC, connect antenna back into reader. Polarity does not matter, pins are equal.

  • You don't have to glue it in place, unless you plan to transport the machine.

Install the NFC reader cover back into its designated place by sliding and securing it with the proper screw.

Connect the Q5000 power supply into the power strip and route the power cable along with the main cable bungle. You can twist it around or use zip ties. The power cable length is a little bit on the short side, but usable. If you find it too short, you can use a USB cable extender.

Connect the USB C cable into the reader and the USB header to the female reduction into the other end of the cable.

Connect the pin header into the motherboard.

  • Be sure you have it in correct orientation, otherwise it won't work (but shouldn’t be damaged).

Use the provided ZIP ties to secure the cables going into the Q5000. This provides protection against accidental disconnection or damage - if there is excessive pull-force applied to the cables.

Turn on the BATM, check that the installation was successful, and that the reader is working.

  • If everything is fine, turn BATM off, and

  • install the computer cover (make sure you do not pinch the card reader cables).

Hardware installation is completed.
