This guide describes the installation of the a QPay Q5000 card reader on a BATMFour.

  • GENERAL BYTES does NOT sell the QPay Q5000.

  • GENERAL BYTES does sell cover conversion plates to house the QPay Q5000 device.

For software configuration instructions, please see: https://generalbytes.atlassian.net/wiki/x/EoBl3Q

Overview

Installation The installation kit consists of:

  • the custom cover plate from GB designed specifically for the reader installation on the BATMFour,

  • a the USB reduction for the data connection, and

  • basic mounting fasteners.

  • Obviously, you’ll also need a QPay Q5000 (not sold or included by GB).

Installation steps

Prepare your Q5000 card reader. Card readers have a number code on the back and - while technically not needed for configuration - we recommend you note which number is in which terminal for future reference. The code on the reader won't be visible once the installation is done.

Insert the Q5000 terminal into the rubber spacer as shown in the picture.

Info

The rubber spacer is supplied by QPay with the Q5000 on demand.

  • Don´t forget to request it during your order from QPay!

...

Place the reader display down (onto a suitable surface so as not to scratch it) and place the custom plate onto the reader.

...

Align the mounting holes with the thread in reader. Use the USB-C cutout for roughing out the position.

...

Use the supplied screws and washers to attach the reader (there is 1 spare of each). Do not tighten them individually, rather start ALL and THEN tighten them together.

...

DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Use only a gentle torque to tighten these screws. The reader nuts are embedded in plastic. You only need to ensure that the reader is not loose. If you overtighten these screws, you risk reader damage.

...

  • The tools included with your BATM are useful for this installation.

Installation consists of two steps:

  1. Remove the original cover plate, then

  2. install the custom cover plate.

...

Warning

Be sure to remove power to the BATM before performing any maintenance on the BATM.

...

Remove the original cover plate.

  1. Open the top door and remove the computer cover.

  2. Remove the fingerprint reader by unscrewing the 6 serrated nuts located at the perimeter of the fingerprint holder (socket size 7mm

...

  1. ).

    1. Store the fingerprint reader temporarily in the cross bar support

...

    1. to move it out of the way.

...

    ...

    1. Peel back the NFC antenna sticker by carefully

    ...

    1. sliding a knife under it.

      1. You can remove it completely (and

    ...

      1. stow it for reuse), or just lift the sides

    ...

      1. to expose the fasteners.

    ...

    1. Remove the

    ...

    1. self-locking nuts (

    ...

    1. 2x 5

    ...

    1. .5mm

    ...

    1. ) fastened to each Phillips-head

    ...

    1. screw.

    ...

    1. If you

    ...

    1. have

    ...

    1. NFC

    ...

    1. installed (typical), disconnect the NFC antenna and remove the NFC reader cover by unscrewing the screw and sliding the cover away.

      1. If you do not have NFC installed, just remove the antenna cover.

    ...

      ...

      • The NFC antenna connector is secured in-place by hot glue. If you have a hot air gun, you can melt it, or use a knife to cut it away. Once released, slide the connector to disconnect it.

      ...

      • A little bit of hot glue is also used to secure the other end of the cable. Carefully release it and remove the NFC antenna.

      ...

      • Pull the NFC cable out (gently) through the hole in the

      ...

      • cover.

      ...

      1. Unscrew the 11 serrated nuts (socket size 7mm

      ...

      1. ) to release the original plate.

      ...

      • Remove only the top-most (original) plate (leave the distance plate installed).

      ...

Install the custom BATMFour Q5000 cover plate.

      Prepare your Q5000 card reader.

The devices have a number code on the back - and while technically not required for installation - we recommend that you note which serials are in which BATMs for future reference.

      Note

The code on the reader won't be visible once the installation is completed.

      1. Insert the Q5000 terminal into the rubber spacer as shown in the picture.

      Info

The rubber spacer is supplied by QPay with the Q5000 on demand only.

      • Don´t forget to request it during your order from QPay (to avoid delays).

      ...

      1. Place the reader display down (onto a suitable surface so as not to scratch it).

      2. Place the rubber spacer onto the Q5000.

      3. Place the custom cover plate onto the reader.

        1. Align the plate mounting holes with the holes in the reader.

        2. Use the USB-C cutout for gauging out the position.

      ...

      1. Attach the Q5000 using the supplied screws and washers.

        1. There is a spare screw and washer supplied.

        2. Do not tighten them individually, rather start ALL screws and THEN tighten them together.

      ...

      1. Gently tighten the 4 screws.

        1. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. The device nuts are encased in plastic. You only need to ensure that the reader is not loose. If you overtighten these screws, you may damage the reader.

      ...

      1. Position the upgrade custom metal plate with the Q5000 installed in place, and refasten the 10 serrated nuts that we removed earlier. You will have 1 (

      ...

      1. unusable

      ...

      1. ) spare nut remaining.

        1. Before tightening

      ...

        1. the nuts, wiggle the metal cover plate a little bit to ensure it is fully seated.

        2. Be gentle with the torque used to tighten these nuts, we recommend 2

      ...

        1. .3 Nm as the maximum limit. If overtightened, the screws will make indentations on the visible side of the

      ...

        1. cover plate.

      ...

      1. Reinstall the fingerprint reader.

        1. Ensure that the reader is properly centered in the cutout by checking from the front of the machine.

      ...

      1. Reinstall the NFC cover (with antenna if applicable).

        1. Do not overtighten these 2 screws as it will bend the plastic cover.

        2. Place sticker back and press in, so that it sticks to the cover completely.

        3. If you have NFC, connect antenna back into reader. Polarity does not matter, pins are equal.

        4. You don't have to glue it in place, unless you plan to transport the machine.

        5. Install the NFC reader cover back into its designated place by sliding and securing it with the proper screw.

      2. Connect the Q5000 power supply into the power strip

      ...

      1. .

      2. Route the power cable along with the main cable bungle.

        1. You can twist it around or use zip ties.

        2. The power cable length is a little bit on the short side, but usable.

      ...

        1. If the situation is unacceptable, you can use a USB cable extender.

      1. Connect the USB-C cable into the reader, and

      2. the USB header to the female reduction into the other end of the cable.

      3. Connect the pin header into the motherboard.

        1. Be sure you have it in correct orientation, otherwise it won't work (but shouldn’t be damaged).

        2. Use the provided ZIP ties to secure the cables going into the Q5000. This provides protection against accidental disconnection or damage

      ...

        1. if there is excessive pull-force applied to the cables.

      ...

      1. Apply power to the BATM

      ...

      1. .

        1. Check that the installation was successful, and that the reader is working.

      2. If everything is fine, turn BATM off, and

      ...

      1. reinstall the main internal computer cover

      ...

      1. .

        1. Make sure you do not pinch the card reader cables

      ...

        1. .

      Hardware installation is completed.
