BATMThree QPay Q5000 Card Reader Upgrade Kit
This guide describes the installation of a QPay Q5000 card reader on a BATMThree.
For software configuration instructions, please see: https://generalbytes.atlassian.net/wiki/x/EoBl3Q
Overview
The installation kit consists of:
a QPay Q5000 card reader,
the custom housing from GB designed for a Q5000 installation on the BATMThree,
the USB reduction for the data connection, and
basic mounting fasteners.
Jump to:
REMOVE POWER TO THE BATM before performing any maintenance on the BATM.
Installation
Prepare the housing
The Q5000 has a number code on the back and while technically not required for configuration, we do recommend that you note which number is in which terminal for future reference. Once the installation is completed, the code won't be visible!
Insert the Q5000 into the rubber spacer as illustrated:
Place the reader display down (onto a soft surface to avoid scratches).
Position the housing face down, and remove the 6 (PH2) screws in the back.
The back cover will now be free to slide to the right. Remove it.
Align the mounting holes with the threads in the reader.
Use the USB C cutout for rough centering.
Use the supplied M3x8 screws and serrated washers to attach the reader (spares of each are included). Start all screws, then tight each - together, gradually, in rotation.
DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE SCREWS!
The Q5000 nuts are embedded in plastic, so excess torque during tightening may cause damage. You only need to ensure that the reader is secure. If you overtighten, you may damage the Q5000. Damaged nut illustrated in this picture:
OPTIONAL: you may choose to close the box now. In that case, you will run the cables from this box to the inside of the BATM. A larger 17mm hole must be drilled in the BATM for the larger cable ends. Navigate to the “closing the box” section (below) for those instructions (if needed), then return here for the remaining instructions.
Attach the housing to the BATM
Attach the drilling template onto the BATMThree. Make sure the lock fits into the cutout (as shown).
Mark the holes with center punch.
Drill holes into marked positions. This step is critical, please follow these recommendations.
Drill a small (3mm) dint (not through) and compare its location with the drilling template. If you can see the dint while looking through the drilling template, your dint is in the correct spot.
Use the dint to guide the final drilled hole (7mm bit recommended).
Cover the internal electronic devices (e.g. the acceptor/recycler) to shield them from any metal burrs falling into them!
Use a vacuum cleaner (or magnet) to carefully remove any metal dust that might later short out nearby circuits.
Drill a 14mm hole for both the data and power cables. We recommend a stepping bit for best results.
Deburr the holes. Carefully clean the inside of the BATM of any metal dust. Magnets are especially useful for this task.
Route the cables
Secure the cables from the Q5000 to the cable holder with the provided ZIP ties to avoid accidental disconnection during installation.
Close the box by sliding a cover from the side and screw in the 6 bolts holding the lid in the box.
Attach the housing while simultaneously threading the cables into the BATM. Secure the housing with the provided M5 screws.
Route the cables as necessary. Be aware of any components located on the open top door. Close the top door cautiously while checking if you are pinching any cables.
Test it
Apply power to the BATM.
Check that the installation was successful, and that the reader is working.
Make sure no cables are pinched.
Hardware installation is completed.
